In the Assam election 2016, one of the most discussed topics was “Polarization”.
The dominant intellectual class obviously put the blame on the saffron brigade, but the contribution of the Congress Party in polarizing the election is not being highlighted .
During the campaign a Congress MP from southern Assam was seen in a Guwahati based and Congress backed television news channel. She was attending a press conference in a
southern Assam town.
The MP called the BJP chief ministerial candidate a murderer of Bengali speaking people
and that his hands are stained with “ Bengali Bloods”. She exhorted all Bengali speaking
people to vote against the BJP. She goes on to say that in her next election meeting in
some other Assam town she would ask all “ Non Assamese” people to come together and vote against the BJP.
Another sitting congress MLA from central Assam demanded fifty fifty division of
Assam based on languages in his election campaign.
Perhaps the intellectual class does not deserve accolades for keeping silence on the above points.
